MLB Home Run Derby Preview: Can Giancarlo repeat?
#1 Giancarlo Stanton vs. #8 Gary Sanchez
Sanchez has the power to succeed in this competition, albeit injuries have limited him to a modest 13 home runs this season. He won’t be able to compete with Stanton though. He has proven himself in this competition and will get off to a strong start again in the first round.
#2 Aaron Judge vs. #7 Justin Bour
Bour has the home-field advantage, but Judge has the advantage in raw power. He will put on a show in the first round for the crowd in Miami.
#3 Cody Bellinger vs. #6 Charlie Blackmon
Bellinger has the hype of being a rookie with 25 home runs, but Blackmon will win this matchup. He has excellent power to all fields and will show out in the first round.
#4 Mike Moustakas vs. #5 Miguel Sano
Sano has shown his excellent power this season, and has the ability to rack up a ton of homers in the derby. Expect a narrow victory over Moustakas.
#1 Giancarlo Stanton vs. #5 Miguel Sano
Stanton just has too much power and experience to lose this round. He will continue to thrive in his home ball park, and will win easily as Sano runs out of gas after an impressive showing in the first round.
#2 Aaron Judge vs. #6 Charlie Blackmon
The pressure of 30 home runs in the first half of the season gets to Judge in this round. I think Blackmon comes calm, cool, and collected and finds himself in the championship against Stanton.
#1 Giancarlo Stanton vs. #6 Charlie Blackmon
Stanton wins because of his experience and the home crowd. He will put on a show all night as he did in last year’s home run derby, sending the Miami fans home happy.
